Charles Willson Peale: Artist, Inventor, Patriot in the Early United States
An outstanding example of ingenuity and drive, Charles Willson Peale was an artist, scientist, inventor, patriot, and military officer during the colonial era, the American Revolution, and the early decades of the United States. This class will present his major works of art, including his portraits of George Washington and other founding fathers, and his archaeological and naturalist investigations, which included taxidermy! He was also the father and grandfather of a dynasty of artists, some of whose works will be included. -
Art in Politics
This class will focus on the dynamic relationship between art and political life. Among topics to be discussed are the employment of works of art to glorify a ruler, including the theme of the dominant leader on horseback. Examples to be studied come from ancient Egypt, the Roman Empire, Early Modern city-states and absolute monarchies, the era of Napoleon, and the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Among other topics to be presented are the appearance of art as political protest, as political satire, and to promote revolution.
